Ramadan Meals for Refugees in Indonesia
Indonesia hosts 11,900 refugees and asylum-seekers, of whom 68% are adults, 30% are children and 2% are elderly, mainly from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen, with numbers rising due to Rohingya boat arrivals. 14% of refugees and asylum seekers in Indonesia are registered with a specific need, including people with a disability, children who are unaccompanied, separated, or otherwise at risk, people with a serious medical condition, the elderly and single parents with children.
Though not a signatory to the Refugee Convention, Indonesia upholds asylum and non-refoulement through national laws. UNHCR supports the government with registration, protection services, access to health and education, and solutions such as resettlement and voluntary return.
Refugees are not allowed to work, and with 70% of UNHCR’s funding gap, assistance is very limited. About 858 of the most vulnerable refugees receive monthly cash support mainly for food, including Rohingya in temporary shelters. Cash for food assistance is therefore one of the most critical supports to help refugees meet basic daily needs with dignity.
